    What is virtual reality?

Virtual reality (VR) typically refers to computer technologies that use virtual reality headsets to generate the realistic images, sounds and other sensations that replicate a real world environment or create an imaginary setting.

VR also simulates a user's physical presence in this environment. VR has been defined as "a realistic and immersive simulation of a three-dimensional 360-degree environment, created using interactive software and hardware, and experienced or controlled by movement of the body”

We know the world through our senses and perception systems. In school we all learned that we have five senses: taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing.

These are, however, only our most obvious sense organs. The truth is that humans have many more senses than this, such as a sense of balance for example. These other sensory inputs, plus some special processing of sensory information by our brains ensure that we have a rich flow of information from the environment to our minds.

How to get awesome virtual reality experiences?

Virtual Reality is used in wide range of systems such as headsets, omni-directional treadmills, special gloves and other hardware devices.  These are used to actually stimulate our senses together in order to create the illusion of reality.
This is more difficult than it sounds since our senses and brains are finely tuned to provide us with an absorbing experience.  If anything is even a little off we can usually tell. . And if you’re using virtual reality, you’ll listen to terms such as immersiveness and realism at different times. The problems in virtual reality experiences are partly technical and also partly conceptual. Virtual reality technology needs to take our physiology into account. For example, the human visual field does not look like a video frame. The peripheral vision is outside your vision, if it were gone you’d notice. Similarly when what your eyes and the vestibular system in your ears tell you are in conflict it can cause motion sickness. This is what happens to some people on boats or when they read while in a car.

Getting the best of VR apps

This may seem like a lot of effort, and it is! What makes the development of virtual reality worthwhile? The potential entertainment value is clear. Immersive films and video games are good examples. Media and the entertainment industry is trillion dollar one and consumers are always looking for innovation.  Virtual reality has many other, more serious, applications as well.

There are a wide variety of applications for virtual reality which include:

    • Architecture
    • Sport
    • Medicine
    • Arts
    • Entertainment

Wherever it is too dangerous, expensive or impractical to do something in reality, virtual reality is the answer. There are a wide variety of applications available for virtual reality from aviation to healthcare to take virtual risks in order to gain real world experience.

One of the most exciting parts for a iPhone app developer and Android app developer is being able to build your virtual reality mobile apps and then experience it for yourself for the first time

Experience virtual reality with mind-blowing features

There are many different types of virtual reality systems, but they all share the same characteristics such as the ability to allow the person to view three-dimensional images. These images look life-sized to the person.

A virtual environment should provide the appropriate responses in real time, as the person explores their surroundings. The problems arise when there is a delay between the person’s actions and system response or latency which then disrupts their experience. The person realizes that they are not in a real-world environment and adapt their activities accordingly which results in an artificial, mechanized way of interaction.

    In summary

Virtual reality is the creation of a virtual environment presented to our senses in such a way that we experience it as if we were really there. It uses an array of technologies to achieve this goal and is a technically complex accomplishment that has to account for our perception and cognition.

VR is used in games, entertainment and many other serious applications. The technology is becoming cheaper and more widespread. We can expect to see many more innovative uses for the technology in the future and perhaps a fundamental way in which we communicate and work thanks to the possibilities of virtual reality.
